Someone asked me about this whole “refugee ban” which is going on in our country right now, and wanted to know how to answer anyone from a Biblical perspective. Here’s what I wrote.
Romans 13:1-6 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
Government (“powers that be”) are “ordained of God;” God put them there. Their primary responsibility is to provide protection from those that have/may have evil intentions; that is very clear from the passage in Romans. So we PRAY for them (whoever is in charge) as 1 Tim 2 exhorts to us to pray. This banning, vetting, deporting, etc thing has some credence to it because of previous acts against the safety/welfare of the citizens of this country. Therefore the “powers that be” are taking steps, as they see it, to protect its citizenry.
I don’t think anyone that is not a Bible believing Christian will get what I just said; hopefully/prayerfully they will, but so many already have their minds made up on the subject and just want to gripe about something because they are unhappy with other things in their life that haven’t gone the way they want them to go. Let’s face it; the “progressives” are whining babies and are jumping on any bandwagon to display their anger/frustrations. Let ‘em kick at the slats in their crib; we’ll move on and just deal with life and especially our obligations to get people in contact with Jesus Christ.
I, for one, am not against immigration, refugees, etc (if done in the right way), FOR, it affords us opportunities to give this group the gospel where otherwise they may not have been able to get it clearly.
I’m sure there’s more; I don’t know it all; I’m going with the Bible every time!
